Grade A2
A2 tool steel is a versatile air-hardening, medium-alloy cold-work tool steel known for its excellent combination of wear resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability. Positioned between O-series (oil-hardening) and D-series (high-chromium) steels, A2 is one of the most widely used grades in industrial tooling due to its balanced mechanical properties and reliable performance.
One of the key advantages of A2 is its air-hardening capability, which significantly reduces distortion and warping during heat treatment. This makes it highly suitable for precision tools, dies, and components where maintaining tight tolerances is critical. It also simplifies the heat treatment process compared to oil-hardening steels.
A2 achieves a hardness range of 56–62 HRC after heat treatment, providing strong wear resistance while maintaining better toughness than high-carbon, high-chromium steels like D2. This balance makes A2 ideal for applications involving both abrasion and moderate impact, where excessive brittleness could be a concern.
Due to its consistent performance, good machinability in the annealed condition, and excellent stability, A2 tool steel is widely used in stamping, forming, cutting, and general engineering applications. It remains a preferred choice for manufacturers seeking durability, precision, and cost-effective tooling solutions.
Key Properties
- Air-Hardening (Low Distortion): Hardens in still air, minimizing warping and distortion. Ideal for precision dies and close-tolerance tools.
- High Hardness (56–62 HRC): Provides strong wear resistance while maintaining good toughness.
- Excellent Toughness: Tougher than D2 and other high-chromium steels, suitable for combined impact and wear applications.
- Good Wear Resistance: Higher than O1 and S-series steels, suitable for medium-to-high wear environments.
- Dimensional Stability: Minimal size change during heat treatment ensures high precision.
- Good Machinability: Easy to machine in annealed condition, reducing manufacturing cost and time.
Common Applications
- Blanking and stamping dies
- Forming dies and bending tools
- Shear blades
