Grade EN36

EN36 is a high-performance nickel–chromium–molybdenum alloy steel designed for applications requiring exceptional strength, toughness, and durability. It is widely used in automotive, heavy engineering, and industrial machinery sectors where components are subjected to high mechanical loads, shock, and fatigue. Its balanced composition allows it to perform reliably under extreme working conditions.

One of the key advantages of EN36 steel is its ability to achieve high tensile strength and hardness after heat treatment. In the normalized condition, it offers tensile strength in the range of 850–1000 MPa, which can be further enhanced through quenching and tempering. Surface hardening processes such as induction hardening can produce a hard outer layer while maintaining a tough core.

Tool Steel

EN36 also exhibits excellent fatigue resistance, making it suitable for components exposed to repeated stress cycles, torsion, and impact loads. Its alloying elements—nickel, chromium, and molybdenum—contribute to improved wear resistance and deep hardenability, ensuring consistent hardness even in larger cross-sections.

Due to its good machinability in the annealed condition and moderate weldability with proper precautions, EN36 is a versatile material for manufacturing complex engineering components. It is commonly used in high-load applications where reliability, strength, and long service life are critical.

Key Properties

  • High Tensile Strength & Hardness: Offers 850–1000 MPa tensile strength and up to 50 HRC after heat treatment.
  • Excellent Toughness & Fatigue Resistance: Ideal for components under cyclic loads, torsion, and impact.
  • Good Wear Resistance: Alloying elements improve resistance to abrasion and surface wear.
  • Deep Hardenability: Maintains uniform hardness across thick sections.
  • Good Machinability: Easy to machine in normalized or annealed condition.
  • Moderate Weldability: Requires preheating and post-weld heat treatment.
