Grade VR 16 HH
VR 16 HH is a high-hardness, pre-hardened mould steel developed for demanding industrial applications requiring superior strength, wear resistance, and dimensional stability. It belongs to the high-performance category of tool steels used in die-casting, forging, extrusion, and high-pressure plastic moulding industries. The term “HH” stands for High Hardness, indicating its enhanced strength compared to standard engineering grades.
This grade is typically supplied in a pre-hardened condition of 38–44 HRC, eliminating the need for further heat treatment. This reduces machining time and prevents distortion during manufacturing. Its optimized alloy composition ensures a balanced combination of hardness, toughness, and thermal stability, making it reliable under extreme working conditions.
VR 16 HH offers excellent wear resistance and high toughness, enabling it to withstand heavy loads, impact stress, and continuous friction. It performs well in applications involving thermal cycling and high temperatures, such as molten metal processing and high-pressure moulding.
Additionally, the material provides good machinability for its hardness range, along with the ability to be nitrided (58–62 HRC surface hardness) for enhanced surface durability. Its good weldability allows efficient repair and modification, making it a dependable choice for long-life tooling applications.
