Grade D3/ 1.2080

D3 / 1.2080 / X210Cr12 is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel specifically designed for applications requiring exceptional wear resistance and high hardness. As part of the oil-hardening tool steel family, it delivers outstanding performance in abrasive and high-load environments. Its composition, containing approximately 12% chromium, ensures superior wear resistance along with moderate corrosion resistance compared to conventional tool steels.

One of the most significant advantages of D3 steel is its ability to achieve extremely high hardness after heat treatment, typically in the range of 58–62 HRC. This high hardness contributes to excellent cutting performance, longer tool life, and improved precision in tooling operations. As a result, D3 is widely used in industries where accuracy and durability are critical.

Tool Steel

D3 also offers excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment, making it ideal for manufacturing precision components that require tight tolerances. However, due to its high carbide content, the steel exhibits moderate toughness and is less suitable for applications involving heavy impact or shock loading. It is best utilized in environments where wear resistance is more important than impact resistance.

Thanks to its strong wear resistance and high compressive strength, D3 / 1.2080 is extensively used in cold working applications such as blanking, stamping, forming, and cutting tools. Its versatility and reliability make it a preferred material for tooling industries, ensuring consistent performance and long service life even under demanding conditions.

Key Properties

  • Extremely High Wear Resistance: Performs exceptionally well under abrasive wear, sliding contact, and repetitive operations on hardened materials.
  • High Hardness (58–62 HRC): Achieves very high hardness after heat treatment, ensuring long die life, precision cutting, and superior performance.
  • Good Dimensional Stability: Maintains shape and size during heat treatment, ideal for precision tooling applications.
  • Moderate Toughness: Due to high carbide content, toughness is lower than D2 (1.2379), making it unsuitable for heavy shock loads.
  • High Compressive Strength: Capable of withstanding high compressive forces, suitable for stamping and forming operations.
  • Decent Corrosion Resistance: Around 12% chromium content provides better corrosion resistance than standard tool steels.
