Grade 1.2083 ESR
D2 / 1.2379 / Dumac 11 is a high-carbon, high-chromium air-hardening cold-work tool steel known for its exceptional wear resistance, high hardness, and superior dimensional stability. As part of the AISI D-series, D2 is considered a more advanced and tougher alternative to D3 (1.2080), offering a well-balanced combination of wear resistance and toughness. This makes it one of the most widely used cold work tool steels across various industries.
One of the key strengths of D2 steel lies in its high chromium carbide content, which provides excellent resistance to abrasive and sliding wear. After proper heat treatment, it achieves a hardness range of 58–62 HRC, ensuring long tool life, improved cutting efficiency, and consistent performance in demanding applications. This makes it highly suitable for tools subjected to continuous friction and mechanical stress.
Compared to D3, D2 offers significantly better toughness and resistance to chipping or cracking. This enhanced toughness allows it to perform reliably in applications involving moderate impact or shock loads. Additionally, its air-hardening capability ensures minimal distortion during heat treatment, making it ideal for precision tooling and components requiring tight tolerances.
D2 also offers moderate corrosion resistance due to its chromium content and can be machined effectively in the annealed condition. It is commonly finished using grinding or EDM processes for achieving high accuracy. Due to its versatility, durability, and performance, D2 / 1.2379 / Dumac 11 is extensively used in manufacturing dies, cutting tools, forming tools, and various industrial components.
Key Properties
