Grade S7

S7 tool steel is a premium-grade shock-resisting tool steel designed for applications involving extreme impact, heavy shock loading, and demanding working environments. As one of the most widely used steels in the S-series, S7 offers a superior combination of toughness, strength, and hardenability, making it an excellent choice for high-performance industrial tooling. Its ability to withstand repeated blows without cracking or chipping sets it apart from conventional tool steels.

One of the most notable features of S7 is its exceptional shock resistance, which surpasses many other grades such as S1, O1, and even D2 in high-impact applications. It can be hardened to a range of 54–60 HRC while still maintaining excellent ductility and toughness. This unique balance allows S7 to perform reliably in applications where both wear resistance and impact strength are required.

Tool Steel

S7 is an air-hardening steel, which minimizes distortion and warping during heat treatment. This makes it particularly suitable for precision tools and components requiring tight tolerances. In addition, it offers good wear resistance and softening resistance at moderately elevated temperatures, allowing it to perform effectively in both cold-work and certain hot-work environments.

Due to its outstanding durability and versatility, S7 tool steel is widely used in industries such as forging, automotive, construction, and heavy manufacturing. It is commonly applied in punches, dies, shear blades, jackhammer bits, and various impact tools where reliability under extreme conditions is essential.

Key Properties

  • Exceptional Shock Resistance: Superior to S1, designed to withstand intense impacts, vibrations, and repeated heavy blows without cracking or chipping.
  • High Hardness with Toughness (54–60 HRC): Achieves high hardness while maintaining excellent ductility, ideal for impact and wear combined applications.
  • Air-Hardening Steel: Minimizes distortion and warping during heat treatment, suitable for precision tools and close-tolerance components.
  • Good Wear Resistance: Provides reliable abrasion resistance in cutting, forming, and shearing applications involving shock.
  • Good Softening Resistance: Maintains hardness at moderately elevated temperatures, suitable for certain hot-work applications.
  • Good Machinability: Easy to machine in annealed condition, reducing manufacturing time and cost.
